Monterey is a beautiful and diverse city with a wide range of activities and attractions to suit different interests. Whether you're interested in marine life, art, history, outdoor activities, or just taking in the natural beauty of the area, you're sure to find things to do in Monterey that are fun and exciting. The Aquarium is known for its extensive collection of marine life from the Monterey Bay and other coastal areas, including sea otters, sharks, sea turtles, and thousands of other species of fish, birds, and invertebrates. The Aquarium features several permanent exhibits, including the Kelp Forest, the Open Sea, and the Touch Pools, as well as rotating special exhibits. The Kelp Forest exhibit is particularly popular, featuring a two-story kelp forest tank with a variety of marine life, including sea otters, leopard sharks, and sea stars. During the summer, the Aquarium can be quite crowded, with long lines and wait times for popular exhibits. However, the weather is typically warm and sunny, making it a great time to visit if you want to enjoy the outdoors. If you're more interested in avoiding crowds and getting a more intimate experience, it's best to visit during the off-season, from September through May. So, make sure to check their calendar, plan accordingly and book the tickets in advance. Luckily I'm a local and once a year we get the opportunity to go in free as a Monterey County resident but during that week especially the weekend expect a long line. This is a must add to your list of the things to do in Monterey. Take a 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach 17-Mile Drive is a scenic drive along the coast in Monterey County that goes through Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, and Carmel-by-the-Sea, passing by some of the most beautiful and iconic coastal landscapes in the area, including the famous Pebble Beach golf course, the Lone Cypress tree, and the 17 Mile Drive gate. The drive is named for the distance between the two entrances, the Pacific Grove gate and the other in Carmel by the Sea. Along the way, you'll pass by several famous national historic landmark and attractions, including the world-renowned Pebble Beach golf course, the historic P.G. Lighthouse, the scenic Cypress Point Lookout, and the picturesque Fanshell Beach. I personally continue to take the drive every once in a while just because it's so beautiful and picturesque. We stop by the ocean during the warmer days and just take a nice stroll along the beach. Explore Pacific Grove and the Butterfly Sanctuary P.G. is a charming coastal town located right next to Monterey. It is known for its Victorian architecture, beautiful beaches, and scenic coastal trails. P.G. is also home to the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History, which features exhibits on the natural history of the area, including the local flora and fauna, geology, and marine life. The Pacific Grove Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary is open year-round, but the best time to visit is between mid-October and mid-March, when the butterflies are most active. Visitors are welcome to walk around the sanctuary at any time, but guided tours are also offered on weekends during the butterfly season. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for most visitors and I must say a must see and do while you are in the area. If this is not on you plan of things to do in Monterey I highly suggest you make it one. Visit Cannery Row and the Old Fisherman's Wharf Cannery Row and Old Fisherman's Wharf are two of the most popular tourist destinations in Monterey. Both are located on the coastline of the Monterey Bay and offer visitors a glimpse into the city's rich history and vibrant culture.
